Delights for Young Men and Maids was a collection of puzzles, poems, rebuses, and “lovers’ knots” (an intricate style of visual poem written in interwoven lines) published in London in 1754. The first part of the book contained around 100 short riddles, each accompanied by a small illustration that acted as a hint to the solution. Given the era, some of the puzzles were somewhat deliberately risqué (particularly one in which the answer is “lapdog”), but the puzzle below is thankfully a perfectly chaste one. Can you work out what is being described here?
