In 1893, author Dean Rivers published a collection called Full of Fun; Comprising Conundrums that contained general puzzles as well as brainteasers of a biblical, poetical, and arithmetical nature (as well as some in French).  The book was popular, and follow-up editions were still published decades later.

With entries like “When was B the first letter in the alphabet?” (“In the days of No-ah”) and “Why are stout men usually sad?” (“Because they are men of sighs,” meaning “size”), for the most part, Rivers’s book was more a collection of eye-rolling puns than a choice selection of lateral-thinking brainteasers. But there were a few particularly fiendish puzzles among all the puns and one-liners—including this one. So, what shape is being described in the verse below?
