A New Collection of Enigmas, Charades, Transpositions, and &c. was the title of a vast collection of more than 200 verse puzzles, quizzes, and riddles published anonymously in London in 1806. Although many of the puzzles in the collection were several verses (and in some cases, several pages) long, the first part of the book—from which the riddle below is taken—was more concise.
