The puzzle below comes from the Tennessee-born writer and Baptist minister James Gilchrist Lawson’s 1924 compendium, The World’s Best Conundrums and Riddles of All Ages. Many of the puzzles in Gilchrist’s collection are simple question-and-answer-style riddles—yet a great many more of them rely on some fairly outlandish punning humor and some serious lateral thinking to unpick the answer. The solution to the question “What tradesman should always be prosperous?,” for instance, is as Gilchrist explains, “The sausage-maker, because he makes both ends meet (meat).” Thankfully, the question below is at the slightly less outlandish end of the scale.
