Coming up with a name for a band can be challenging, and not all first choices stick. Green Day originally performed under the name Sweet Children. They changed it to Green Day to avoid confusion with another Bay Area band, Sweet Baby. Green Day likely came from the West Coast slang term for a day heavy on marijuana use.

You may think there’s only one Nirvana, but there are at least two: A 1960s band with that name challenged the Kurt Cobain-led ’90s grunge group, claiming they had ownership of the brand.
