If you thought the expression for someone who incites a mob to action was rebel-rouser instead of rabble-rouser, you’re not alone. Rebel-rouser is an eggcorn: a technically wrong term or phrase that actually makes sense. A rebel-rouser sounds like a person who rouses rebels, which rabble-rousers generally do (rabble just means “mob”). Eggcorn is an eggcorn, too, named by linguist Geoff Pullum in reference to people’s mistaking the word acorn for eggcorn.
