Following the success of its original Istanbul outpost last spring, the Breaking Bad-themed coffee shop Walter’s Coffee Roastery has opened up stateside. The first U.S. location just debuted in Brooklyn’s hip Bushwick neighborhood.
Walter’s tries to harness the spirit of chemist/superlab assistant Gale Boetticher's intense coffee geekery on the show in cafe form. “We respect coffee and its chemistry,” reads the company website. “From extraction and brew temperatures to espresso machine pressure and grinder configuration, we have coffee down to a science.”
According to Gothamist, the new Brooklyn location features a menu design inspired by the periodic table and glass lab equipment as decor. The nerd factor doesn’t stop at aesthetics, though. The shop’s espresso machine, naturally, had to have a PID controller—an algorithmic method of maintaining temperature to the exact degree—so that it can crank out shots that are perfectly brewed, chemically speaking.
Even if you can’t make it to the shop, Walter’s provides careful step-by-step brewing guides for creating the perfect cup with different devices, be it Aeropress, Chemex, or a simple (ish) pour-over. And Brooklyn isn’t the only destination in the company’s expansion plans; there’s also a Walter’s opening up soon in Dubai.
And yes, they do have lemon brew.
