While The New Mutants might never be released in theaters, Marvel is having a bit of fun with the comic. New Mutants: War Children just gave a clever shout-out to another major franchise.
The movie, which has had its release date pushed back three times now, stars Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Game of Thrones alum Maisie Williams. And for the latest comic issue, created by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, a Game of Thrones Easter egg was hidden with the character Wolfsbane, whom Williams plays in the film adaptation.
As reported by NME, the comic includes an illustration of Wolfsbane sleeping in bed with a book in her arms, which just happens to be A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.
As cute as the crossover is, it may not be enough for fans desperately awaiting the movie. Though director Josh Boone was signed on in 2015, it doesn’t look like the film will see the inside of a movie theater. Rumors of it debuting only on Hulu or Disney+ are going around. In March 2019, Williams told Rolling Stone that she wasn’t aware of the real release date. “Who knows when the f**k that’s gonna come out,” she said.
As of now, The New Mutants is scheduled for an April 3, 2020 theatrical release.
