This past weekend was filled with several major casting announcements for Marvel and Disney projects as the 2019 D23 Expo took place in Anaheim, California. Arguably the most exciting was news that Game of Thrones star Kit Harington would be joining the cast of The Eternals, the upcoming Marvel movie that also stars Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Kumail Nanjiani. This came as a pleasant surprise to many, especially considering Harington's former Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden has also been cast in the movie.

Harington will be playing Dane Whitman, who, according to IGN, is the third character in the comics to take on the Black Knight name. The superhero famously wields a sword called the “Ebony Blade,” and is affiliated with multiple groups, including the Eternals and even the Avengers.

Naturally, this is causing many people to speculate that Harington's character will become a part of the new Avengers team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Marvel writers want to stick to the comics version, adding Whitman to the squad would be a no-brainer—not to mention a crowd-pleaser.

A recent comment by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige only added fuel to the fire. At the D23 Expo, he teased that Harington could have a bigger part in the MCU beyond The Eternals. "We were so happy when [Harington] agreed to join, and it is a part that could perhaps grow into something else in the future," Feige told Good Morning America.
