Small things bright and beautiful

I'm not really into insects, but I found this image at ettf, and was so stunned by the colors that I had to look it up. Apparently, the pic is of a caterpillar cecropia moth. More specifically, this is a cecropia caterpillar in its second stage of shedding. According to wikipedia, the cecropia molts 5 times and is only this beautiful in the second stage of molting--when its drizzled with vivid blue, orange and yellow sprinkles. I saw these on the ever-brilliant Boingboing, and thought the concept was so thought-provoking it deserved to be posted. A photographer named Dulce Pinzon has taken snaps of Mexican immigrants doing their work while dressed up as superheroes. Goats on a Tree

Check out these terrific photos from The Cellar. We've actually covered this phenomenon in the magazine before (in a Spinning the Globe on Morocco), but it's fairly common for the region's goats to mosey up trees in search of food. According to the blog where the photos come from, the practice also occurs in regions of Northern India and other drought-ridden areas. Rabbit Run

The Cellar posted these crazy photos last week, and I couldn't help but put "˜em up. Apparently, the perspective is partially to blame for the freaky size of these wittle wabbits (the camera does add 10lbs after all). But the angle isn't entirely to blame. The super-sized lagomorphs weigh in at a sturdy 22lbs, and are the work of the pictured German breeder Karl Szmolinsky. Strangely enough, the biggest fans of Karl's work seem to lie in Asia, as he's sold 12 of his bunnies... READ ON
