As you will see in the above video, zellige, or Moroccan tile work, is not easy to create. Every one of the many steps it takes to transform raw wet clay into a sublime mosaic is done by hand—a process that is as painstaking as it is mesmerizing to watch. Using a process that is perhaps a thousand years old, master artisans form the tiles, glaze them, mark them with designs, meticulously chip them into geometric shapes, and fit them together into designs and patterns based on mathematical principles. The level of surgeon-like precision required makes you really appreciate the artisans' deep level of skill. And of course, the resulting zellige are gorgeous.
