Creating Voices for Chewbacca and R2-D2

Ben Burtt was the sound designer for Star Wars, and he came up with all kinds of now-iconic sounds. In the video below, he explains the arduous process of giving a voice to Chewbacca. Burtt: "It's a voice which is manufactured completely out of animal sounds, principally bears." Have a listen (note that, ironically, the sound on this video is really low...crank it up!):

And now, R2-D2, an even tougher challenge. Note that Burtt went on to "voice" WALL-E for Pixar, so he's probably a world expert on adorable robot voices. Here's his first adventure in robot voicing:
