12 Years a Slave won Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year, and for good reason—it's a terrific movie. But it's also a terrific book. The film is based on an 1853 memoir by Solomon Northup. The memoir was republished in 1968 after decades of research by historian Sue Eakin.
