10 Excellent Internet Riffs on True Detective
There's not too much that's funny about True Detective, the HBO show starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana detectives out to solve a series of ritual murders. Still, depressingly philosophical Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and good old boy Marty Hart (Harrelson) have spawned many a delightful internet parody. In honor of Sunday's season finale, here are a few of our favorites.
1. True Detective as Law & Order
Ever wonder what True Detective would be like if it was an episode of Law & Order? Wonder no more!
2. Cohle's Pinterest Board
From "Undercover Clothing" to "Flat Circles," this board nails "sometimes a pessimist, always a realist" Rust Cohle. Particularly delightful is the "DIY Craft Ideas" board, which features the little men Cohle makes out of empty Lone Star cans while being questioned by present-day cops.
3. True Warrior Cats
A feline-filled take on True Detective's spooky title sequence. I'd watch this show.
4. True Detective Conversations
As detectives in the mid-'90s, Cohle and Hart spend a lot of time in the car together. During that time, Hart often tries to start up some small talk, but Cohle's responses are pretty weird, and Hart just doesn't get it. (Example: "Do you think a man can love two women at once?" Hart asks. "I don't think men can love," Cohle responds. Cut to Hart's confused face.) On the True Detective Conversations tumblr, Hart attempts to engage Cohle in conversation about everything from Frozen's best song to what he's doing for Valentine's Day. The results are hilarious.
5. This is the Yellow King!
The internet has many theories about who True Detective's oft-mentioned Yellow King is. David Sidorov created this great video about this theory. We think he's on to something.
6. Rust Discovers Marty's Secret Tape
Hint: It contains scenes from a Woody Harrelson movie.
7. Cohle's OKCupid Profile
Cohle's first marriage didn't work out; neither did his relationship with one of Maggie's friends. So CollegeHumor imagined what it would be like if Rust Cohle was looking for love on OKCupid (although, for the record, Cohle doesn't believe that men can love). "I'm an empty space, an absence," the self-summary reads. "A thing that labors under the illusion of having a self ... While also trying to, well, put that self back out there a little bit these days. Hence... the profile. Do what you will with it, pawns of delusion and lust." The first thing you'll notice about him? "The void. The shell. The Fu Manchu stache." What a catch!
8. #TrueDetectiveSeason2
From the beginning, True Detective was planned as an anthology—different characters (occasionally played by the same actors) and storylines for every season. When Twitter users decided to cast the show's second season, hilarity ensued. The ideas are still coming.
9. Replacing McConaughey's Oscar
