Good luck with today's mentalfloss.com Brain Game Think Thursday challenge:
A candy machine has three buttons: one labeled RED, one labeled BLUE, and one labeled SURPRISE. When working correctly, the RED button should provide a red candy, the BLUE button a blue candy, and the SURPRISE button either a red candy or a blue candy. But someone changed the stickers on the buttons of this machine so that NONE of the three buttons are correctly labeled.
With this in mind...
How many of the machine's buttons
do you have to push in order to learn
the candy colors that each button will provide?
Here is the ANSWER.
ONLY ONE - THE "SURPRISE" BUTTON. Whichever color you get with the SURPRISE button, you'll know the other two colors.
If the SURPRISE button gives a red candy, then it always gives out red (since it can't be the real SURPRISE button). Therefore, the RED button must give out blue candy, and the BLUE button must give out the surprise candy.
If the SURPRISE button gives a blue candy, the BLUE button must give out red candy, and the RED button must give out the surprise candy.
Thanks for playing! Tomorrow, it's Free-for-All Friday.
