Thanksgiving Dinner Conversation: Pumpkin Pie
Before Halloween, Stacy Conradt filled us up with trivia treats about our favorite sweets. She's back again for another food series leading up to Thanksgiving.
1) The first pumpkin pie was supposedly made by the pilgrims. They would select a fresh pumpkin from the patch, hollow it out, and fill it with honey, spices and cream or milk. Then they would bake it whole. This eventually evolved into the pumpkin pie about 50 years later.
2) The American Pie Council surveyed people to find out what their favorite flavor of pie was. Apple won, but pumpkin came in second. I think I would like to be part of the American Pie Council.
3) Pumpkin Pie spice is typically a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, ginger, clove and allspice. Allspice is actually not a mix of spices, as you might assume, but is actually the dried fruit of the Pimenta dioica plant.
4) According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world's biggest pumpkin pie was 2,020 pounds post-baking (above). It was made in New Breman, Ohio, by the New Breman Giant Pumpkin Growers in 2005. It was 12 feet, 4 inches wide and 4 inches deep and included 900 pounds pumpkin.
